Before You Switch Clubs for Playing Time, Ask What Would Change
Your kid is not playing. The coach is not giving answers. Another club an hour away is interested. Most parents know exactly how this conversation goes, because most of us have had it in the car.
Chris Mueller had it as a college player. He did not start or score as a freshman at Wisconsin, and after two years of barely playing he wanted to transfer to a smaller school in a weaker league to get minutes. His parents said no. Not because they did not care, but because of what his mother told him: "It's not you going somewhere else and being the same person. Like, you have to change."
Should My Kid Switch Soccer Clubs?
Sometimes, yes. A club that is not coaching, not communicating, or not right for the age is a reason to leave. But the trainers and directors who come on this show keep describing the same pattern from the other side. Edson Elcock, who trains players in Brooklyn, put it plainly: when a kid does not make a team, families now go find the next option, and "I feel like you're running away from it rather than running to, like going to it." He calls it too much jumping around to make things easier for the kid.
Mueller stayed. He describes locking himself in his room while teammates went out, and he sums up the lesson as the most important one soccer taught him: "you get out what you put in." He left Wisconsin as the first two-time All-American in the program's history. His parents' point was not that the coach was right. It was that the player who arrives at the new club is the same player who left the old one, unless something in his habits changes first.
So before the move, ask a harder question than "where will he play more?" Ask what your kid would do differently at the new club that he is not doing now. If the honest answer is nothing, the club is probably not the problem.
What parents can do
Ask your kid what they would change at a new club before you look
Have them ask the coach directly what is keeping them off the field
Move for a better environment, not for an easier one
